The Christchurch – Little River Railtrail
Escape the city and discover the delights of the Banks Peninsula
Following the route of a 19th century railway, the Little River Railtrail is a combined walking and cycling track running from the edge of Christchurch city out into the beautiful, rural landscape of the Canterbury region.
An area rich in history, geology and bird life
Skirting the massive flanks of the ancient volcanoes which make up the Banks Peninsula, the trail hugs the shoreline of the vast lagoon Te Waihora/ Lake Ellesmere, and it’s smaller twin Te Roto o Wairewa/Lake Forsyth. This is a region rich in wildlife and natural vegetation. Keep a pair of binoculars handy as you ride alongside Te Waihora: the lake is home to one of the most diverse bird populations in the country, with as many as 98,000 birds nesting along its shoreline at any one time.
A great daytrip from Christchurch
Riding from Christchurch to Little River is a journey of approximately 49km, and the trail makes for a great daytrip from the city.
